Sunburns!

Summertime always brings a feeling of excitement.  There is something about no more school for three months that can't be bought.  It's almost like Christmas without the presents........almost!

Even with all the excitement, I don't remember too much about my childhood summers except for the yearly sunburn!!  It wasn't a simple sunburn either, it was the crab-red-turn-into-blisters kind of a burn.  You were miserable for the week and swore you would never leave the house again without applying sunblock.

So, here at American Fork Pediatrics, we want to send out a few sun-care recommendations from Dr. Whiting and Kim, FNP.
  • Most important, don't forget to apply sunscreen on your child this season!!
  • Use an SPF of at least 15, but preferably higher.
  • We highly recommend the Johnson & Johnson or Bullfrog brand sunblock.
  • Lastly, use a waterproof and broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB rays) sunblock.  If you are outside longer than 3-4 hrs, don't forget to re-apply.
We hope this information will help you prevent the miserable sunburns that seem to go hand in hand with summer. If  by some chance you do get a sunburn, we recommend the following,
  • The only topical we recommend is Aloe Vera gel.  When applying the gel, be careful not to rub the burn too much as this can cause an increase in blistering and it's painful!
  • Do not pop any blisters.  If the blister is larger than a quarter in size, your child should be seen in the office.
Enjoy your well deserved summer vacations and don't forget to call our office with any questions or concerns!!
