• This toll-free number will connect you to the nearest poison center 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

What should I do if my child swallows something poisonous?

• First, get the poison away from your child.
• If there is still some in their mouth, make him/her spit it out or remove it with your fingers.  
• Keep whatever it was they swallowed to help you identify the material with the poison control.
• Do not make your child vomit.
• If your child is unconscious, not breathing, having convulsions, call 911 immediately.  Do not wait to call poison control, this is a medical emergency!
• If your child does not have those symptoms, call the Poison Control toll free number.
• Be prepared to give the following information:

• Your name and phone number
• Your child's name, age and weight.
• Any medical conditions your child has.
• Any medication being taken.
• The name of the material your child has taken(read off the container).
• The time the item was swallowed(or when your child was found) and the amount you think was swallowed. 

The Poison Control Center will give you directions to care for your child.  If the poison is very dangerous, or if your child is very young, you may need to take them to the nearest hospital.  (information taken from www.aap.org)
